Hadley, calmly scooping her oatmeal, nced over. “Nutritious vegetable smoothie.”
Eric grimaced. “Can I have coffee instead?”
“No.” She shook her head without hesitation. “Caffeine isn’t good for your heart. Until you recover, not a drop.”
She picked up the smoothie and brought it closer to him. “You should drink this for now, until you get better.”
He didn’t move, his reluctance obvious. Hadley noticed—and her eyes softened slightly. “I made it myself.”
“Really?” Eric raised a brow. His expression shifted, his eyes lighting up. “Really.” Hadley gave a small, solemn nod.
“Then I’ll drink it.” He smiled. “I wouldn’t want to waste your effort.”
He didn’t reach for the cup. Instead, he leaned forward, bringing his lips to the rim.
Hadleyughed under her breath.
Was he expecting her to feed him?
This man really knew how to take advantage of a moment.
Still, when she saw his unguarded smile, something tightened in her chest. She lifted the cup gently.
She held the cup to his lips. “Drink slowly. Don’t choke.”
Eric took a sip, careful and quiet. His chest tightened. She was being so gentle with him.
“Now finish your breakfast,” Hadley suggested, cing her empty cup on the table and nodding toward the spread of breakfastid out for Eric.
Eric hesitated, then murmured, “Okay…” He bowed his head and started eating. A momentter, he paused, nostrils ring. “What’s that smell?”

Hadley raised an eyebrow, tilting her head toward the kitchen door that opened to the garden.
“Don’t you recognize it? It’s your herbal broth.”
“Oh, right,” Eric said, his brow creasing slightly as he nodded.
Hadley borated, “Your father sent a servant from the main house. She started simmering the herbs at dawn. It’s probably done by now.”
As she spoke, the servant approached, carrying a tray with a delicate ceramic bowl filled with a dark, pungent, steaming hot concoction.
“Here’s your remedy, Mr. Scott,” the servant said, setting the bowl before Eric.
The sharp, bitter aroma hit Hadley, and she scrunched her nose instinctively. Eric stared at the bowl, his throat working as he muttered, “Do I really have to drink this?”
“Just drink it quickly. It’s part of your treatment,” Hadley coaxed gently. “The doctor mentioned yesterday that it works best when it’s hot. If it cools, it won’t do as much good.”
Eric let out a heavy sigh, his face resigned as he lifted the bowl. “Fine…”
