543.Chapter 543
Caleb asked, "What do you mean by ''not quite right''?"
Caleb looked confused, unable to understand what Adeline was trying to say.
Adeline replied, "Oh, what I mean is, don''t you think Sophie''s been acting a bit odd since she returned? She''s just not the same."
"There''s nothing wrong with her," Caleb shook his head and said, "I think Sophie is perfectly fine. In fact, she''s been much more gentle with me since she came back, especially..."
At the mention of this, Caleb suddenly turned red, a lovesick expression on his face.
Adeline, seeing her son''s pathetic look, couldn''t help but twitch her mouth in frustration. "Forget it, forget it. You''re hopeless. I''ll have to check things out myself."
Caleb said, "What are you talking about? Wait, where are you going, Mother?"
Adeline ignored her foolish son and lifted her feet, heading straight toward the courtyard where Caleb and Sophie now lived.
As soon as she entered the room, she saw Sophie sitting on the bed with her eyes closed, resting.
Adeline paused for a moment, then scowled and scolded, "Some people just don''t know how to act like a wife. Your mother-inwes to visit, and you don''t even bother to greet her."
Hearing Adeline''s voice, Sophie opened her eyes, revealing a cold and distant look.
Adeline was startled by the chilling gaze, and for a moment, she felt a shiver run down her spine.
"What''s this?" Adeline thought, feeling ufortable, as if Sophie''s gaze was that of a lifeless person.
Sophie calmly said, "Oh, it''s you. I was resting after serving my husbandst night. I didn''t notice your arrival. Please forgive me."
Hearing this, Adeline''s anger red up. "What a shameless little wench."
She thought Sophie believed that by seducing her precious son, she could act arrogantly in the Marquis''s estate.
Adeline gave her a dismissive nce, and when Sophie finally got up from the bed, Adeline couldn''t help but feel even more suspicious.
Did she see that correctly?
Resting is one thing, but who rests like that, sitting cross-legged instead of lying on the bed?
This was strange.
Could it be that Sophie, like Eliza, went to some monastery to be a nun?
No, Sophie wouldn''t give up the wealth and power of the Marquis''s estate to be a nun.
If she could endure hardship, she wouldn''t have shamelessly clung to her son in the first ce.
So what is Sophie really up to?
Sophie said, "Adeline, please have some coffee."
Sophie appeared docile and understanding as she poured a cup of coffee for Adeline.
But Adeline raised her hand and knocked the coffee cup over, displeased. "What''s this supposed to mean? Are you giving me coffee that''s been sitting around for who knows how long? You''re the daughter of the Duke''s estate, even if you''re a bastard, you should at least know some manners. You''re embarrassing the Stonor family."
Sophie clenched her fists, then shot a cold nce at Adeline before turning to make a fresh cup of coffee.
Adeline snorted and picked up the new coffee, quickly moving on to the next criticism, as she never made the same
mistake twice.
"Look at you. You don''t know how to stand or sit properly. Back at the Duke''s estate, no one taught you how to act, but now that you''re in the Marquis''s estate, you need to learn all the proper manners. Now, stand up straight."
Adeline''s sharp gaze scrutinized Sophie inch by inch, "Lift your head, straighten your back, why are you slouching? You''re not a servant. You look so lowly, if anyone saw you like this, they''d think you were Caleb''s maid." Sophie thought, ''This old hag. How dare shepare me to tes ty maids?''
Hearing Adeline''s words, Sophie almost couldn
Sessfully unlocked!
her chest.
If she didn''t still need this damn Marquis''s estate, she would''ve killed these old hags by now. Sophie thought, ''But it''s fine. Adeline, you wicked woman, if you dare pick a fight with me, don''t expect to leave in one piece.'' Sophie stared at Adeline, blowing on the coffee she had just made, before taking a sip. A sinister smile crept onto her lips.
543.Chapter 543
After Adeline ced the cup down, Sophie quickly regained herposure, acting innocent as she softly asked, is there something you need, or did you juste by to visit?"
Adeline replied, "What, can''t Ie over without a reason?"
Adeline mmed the cup down and red at Sophie.
Sophie fought back the urge to snap, forcing a smile as she weakly said, "Of course not."
Adeline coldly snorted, "Don''t think I don''t know. A few days ago, you weren''t even at the Duke''s estate. Tell me, where did you go during those days?"
Gabriel had already sealed off the news of her disappearance, but how did this old hag know?
It seems Adeline still had some eyes on her from the Duke''s estate, even after all these years in the Marquis''s estate.
Sophie replied, "During those days, I just went back to where I used to live, to visit my mother''s grave. I intended to bring my husband with me, but after everything that happened, and with him being injured, I didn''t want him to follow me. So, I went alone to inform myte mother that I was married."
Sophie said all this with a serious expression, as though she really had gone back.
But as she spoke, she couldn''t help but snicker inwardly.
Fortunately, she had already prepared an exnation.
Without it, with just her father''s words, she would''ve been caught by Adeline by
now.
Upon hearing that Sophie went to pray at her mother''s grave, Adeline''s expression softened slightly.
After all, it was the proper thing to do, and as Sophie said, her foolish son should''ve gone with her to pray. Thinking this, Adeline suddenly felt like she hadn''t beenpletely unreasonable, so she cleared her throat.
But the next second, Adeline''s eyes widened as something struck her. "Wait, you said you went to pray for Zole, then why do youe back covered in so many injuries?"
Adeline''s voice rose as she asked the final question, a sudden suspicion creeping into her tone.
Sophie''s expression immediately shifted.
Adeline sneered, "Don''t think I don''t know. Caleb already told me about those injuries on your body. If you were really just going to pray for your deceased mother, why did youe back hurt? And why did Gabriel hide your whereabouts?" She thought, ''With all the secrecy, it''s clear you must''ve been up to something shameful. From the very beginning, I suspected this little wench wasn''t proper. Now, it''s clear that I was right.''
