283.Chapter 283
As Eliza pondered this, Ro''s following words confirmed the suspicion that had been building in her mind. "The flower releases a colorless, odorless toxin throughout its entire life cycle-from the seed to the bloom. This toxin gradually seeps into the body, weakening it over time. In two months, an ordinary person would likely die from it without ever realizing what was happening. They would feel sick, convinced it was just an illness. They would die thinking they sumbed to disease."
"Caroline was likely already poisoned by this flower, which is why she had such a difficultbor when she gave birth to you. Zoie probably intended for her to die in childbirth, taking both of them, but she unexpectedly survived that ordeal."
Eliza''s grip tightened, her hands trembling as she clenched them into fists. Her face remained impassive, but blood began to trickle from the palms of her hands. Ro went on, "It''s likely the Duke of Mowbay, or perhaps the Padi family, someone must have intervened to keep Caroline alive for a while longer. But it was only for a short time. In the end, Caroline was still killed by that wicked woman, Zoie."
As for the brief reprieve Caroline had received, Eliza had already figured that out in her heart.
She didn''t reveal her thoughts, but instead lowered her gaze and spoke softly, "Thank you for the information. I''ll need both of you to continue searching for evidence of Zoie''s poisoning of Caroline. If the flower can be found, please do everything in your power to locate it. No matter the oue, once I''ve created the antidote for the poison in your bodies, I will make sure to deliver it to you."
Eliza thought, ''Caroline couldn''t have died in vain. Someone had to pay for it. Gabriel, Sophie, they all had to die. After Gilbert and Ro left, Eliza quietly returned to her room alone.
She entered the pendant''s pocket farm and leaned silently against Caroline''s gravestone.
It had taken so long, but she had finally uncovered the truth about Caroline''s death.
Ironically, her thoughts suddenly turned to Matthew.
Eliza thought, ''I cannot understand why my full-blooded brother, Matthew, is so protective of Sophie. Even when Iid everything out for him, he still chose to believe Sophie.''
''Why? Why wouldn''t he listen to me? Why doesn''t he trust me? Why did he abandon me? Why did he choose Sophie?'' ''I''ve been fixated on finding the evidence, not just to confront Gabriel, but because I need to know-when the proof that Zoie killed Caroline is finallyid before Gabriel and Matthew, will they still choose Sophie? And what expressions will they have when faced with the truth?''
With this almost obsessive, maddening thought, Eliza raised her hands, palms together, and recited a prayer in a calm, steady voice.
She remembered the first time she hade to the Saint Grace Nunnery, pleading with Mary to let her be a nun. Eliza thought, ''That time, I risked everything.''
However, it also meant that Mary had known from the very beginning that Eliza''s affection wasn''t genuine.
Eliza thought, ''I never truly joined the nunnery with pure intentions. My senses are tainted, my mind is distracted, and my heart is consumed with a thirst for vengeance I can''t let go of. I''ve wronged Mary and everyone at Saint Grace Nunnery who treated me with kindness.''
"The hatred in my heart is too deep to release, as vast as the ocean. How can Iy down
my sword?"
Eliza thought, ''Perhaps one day I''ll be able to let go, but only after I''ve taken my revenge and settled the score.''
As the night passed, the darkness outside slowly gave way to the first light of dawn.
Eliza left the pocket farm and, after changing into her ck habit, continued with her usual routine. With a Bible in hand, she made her way to the main hall, knelt before God, and diligently performed her morning prayers, copying scriptures with the calm demeanor of someone unaffected by the world.
Yet, perhaps, it wasn''tplete peace.
"Renee, could you do me a favor and deliver a letter to Mki?" Eliza asked quietly.

To her surprise, she was toote.
"What? Dn''s already left?" Sophie asked, frowning at the servants standing outside Dn''s quarters.

"Yes, Lady Sophie," one of them replied. "Lord Dn woke up this morning and left right away."
Sophie''s displeasure was evident. "Why didn''t you stop him? What if Lord Mowbayes looking for Dn?"
The servants exchanged a nce. "ording to Lord Mowbay''s orders, we were
told not to interfere with Lord Dn."
Sophie was taken aback.
She hadn''t expected Gabriel to take such a hands-off approach with Dn, mainly after he had run away.
Sophie thought, ''What does that mean? Is he giving up on Dn? Or is he more focused on Eliza–the “little wretch"-and letting Dn go so he can get closer to her?''
The thought crossed Sophie''s mind, and she couldn''t help but grit her teeth in frustration.
Sophie thought, ''Damn it. If only I hade yesterday, taken control of Dn earlier, it would have been better than letting him run off and help that Eliza!''
Frustrated, she stamped her foot and turned to leave.
But before she had gone far, a familiar figure appeared, hurriedly walking back toward her.
"Dn?"
Sophie''s heart leapt with relief. She had thought he was gone for good, but to her surprise, he hade back!
