When Jonathan burst into the room, Aurora froze for a split second.
"Jonathan, what are you doing here?"
Then a thought struck her. She turned sharply toward Sherman.
"Sherman, did you call my brother?"
Simone and Sellers would never gossip or tip Jonathan off. That left only Sherman, who had always been prejudiced against Ste.
Sherman avoided her gaze, shifting his eyes away.
"Aurora, something this serious-did you really think you could keep it from him? Besides, your hand is injured."
At the mention of Aurora''s injury, Jonathan''s expression finally changed. His eyes dropped to her hand.
"Aurora, what happened to you?"
Her left hand was wrapped neatly in white gauze.
Aurora''s face was calm, almost dismissive.
"Jonathan, Sherman''s just overreacting. It''s nothing just a hairline fracture in my pinky finger. Really, I''m fine."
Jonathan knew Aurora''s tendency to downy her troubles. He nced at Sherman for confirmation.
Sherman nodded slightly, confirming Aurora''s story. Then he spoke in a low, serious tone.
"Jonathan, if this were just a regr car ident, I wouldn''t have made a fuss. But this wasn''t an ident. Someone tampered with the car-it was deliberate.”
He met Jonathan''s eyes, gaze steely.
"The brakes in my uncle''s car failed. Someone sabotaged it."
Jonathan''s brows furrowed.
"How could something like this happen? Has Sellers made any enemies?"
Sherman let out a strange, mirthlessugh.
"My uncle rarelyes to New Vespera. He doesn''t have any grudges here. In fact, he only arrived off the ne today. The only person he had any sort of conflict with sincending-well, that person is—”
Sherman didn''t get to finish. Aurora cut him off, her voice sharp as a whip.
"Sherman, if you keep talking nonsense, don''t me me for cutting you off as a friend."
Sherman fell silent, hands raised in surrender, his face a picture of resignation. "Fine, I won''t say another word."
Jonathan turned to Aurora, his tone gentle but firm.
"Aurora, if you won''t talk, I won''t force you. But I''ll have someone look into this. The truth wille out, one way or another."
He paused, voice lowering.
"If we''re not careful, Father might hear about it too."
He hadn''t told Skyler about any of this. Their father was getting olde and his health was failing. One of the reasons Aurora was keeping things quiet was precisely to avoid worrying him.
Aurora finally spoke up, her voice steady.
"Sellers'' car was tampered with. The brakes failed, and that''s why we crashed. That''s all there is to it."
She shot a warning look at Sherman.
"Sherman, don''t make wild usations without proof. You could end up ming
the wrong person."
Sherman shrugged.
"Alright. I''ll keep my mouth shut. But
Jonathan''s your family-he has
every right to know what happened. We''ve already reported it to the police. They''ll be investigating, and Jonathan will find out soonerorter." .

Aurora''s brow creased.
"You called the police?"
Sherman replied,
"Aurora, it wasn''t just you in that car. Miss Lerman was there too. Someone went to great lengths to make sure my uncle''s car crashed. Whoever did this wanted people dead. Shouldn''t we at least inform the police?"
Aurora argued,
"We should get the facts straight before making a report."
"Fine, have it your way," Sherman said, ncing at Jonathan. "Jonathan, you can check with the medical team next door. You''ll see for yourself."
Jonathan shot Sherman a cold nce, then strode out of the room.
He reached the door to the next room, didn''t bother to knock, and walked right in.
Inside, Ste was tending to the wound on her wrist. Seeing her, and recalling Sherman''s pointed remarks, Jonathan''s eyes turned icy cold.
