Chapter 211

The Kane Industries conference room felt warm andfortable for the first time in weeks. Chinese takeout containers sat open on the polished table, mixed with financial documents andptopputers. The overhead lights had been dimmed, reced by the softer glow of deskmps that made the evening feel less like work and more like friends sharing a meal.

Camille sat at the head of the table, picking at her lo mein while reviewing thetest evidence Hannah and Stefan had uncovered. After days of intense investigation, they had finally allowed themselves to rx slightly, to eat real food instead of surviving on coffee and energy drinks.

"This connection to the Cayman Inds ount is brilliant," Camille said, gesturing with her chopsticks toward Hannah''sptop screen. "How did you think to look there?"

Hannah smiled, her face flushed with quiet pride. "Stefan suggested it. He said shellpanies always use certain banking patterns in international shipping, and those same patterns might apply to financial fraud."

Stefan felt warmth spread through his chest at Hannah''s praise. Over the past three days, their professional partnership had evolved into something deeper. They worked together with an ease that surprised both of them, their different expertisebining to create insights neither could have reached alone.

"The timing of the transfers proves everything," Stefan said, leaning forward to point at a specific document. "Someone stole Meridian''s safety funds exactly two weeks before they contacted Victoria about the cost-cutting measures."

As Stefan reached across the table, he ced his hand gently on Hannah''s shoulder to steady himself while examining the document she was holding. The gesture was casual, friendly, the kind of unconscious contact that happens between people who have grownfortable with each other.

Hannah didn''t pull away. If anything, she leaned slightly into the touch, her eyes meeting Stefan''s for a moment thatsted longer than strictly necessary for discussing financial records.

Camille watched this interaction with a mixture of amusement and approval. After everything Stefan had been through, after the guilt and self-doubt that had consumed him since his betrayal of her marriage, it was good to see him finding connection with someone who appreciated his better qualities.

The conference room door burst open without warning.

Alexander stood in the doorway, his hair disheveled and his expensive shirt wrinkled. His eyes were bloodshot from stress and sleepless nights, and his face carried the haggard look of a man pushed beyond his emotional limits.

"What the hell is this?" Alexander''s voice cut through thefortable atmosphere like a knife.

Camille felt her heart sink. "Alexander? How did you get in here?"

"I still have my ess card from the Phoenix Grid project." Alexander''s gaze moved between the three of them, focusing with burning intensity on Stefan''s hand still resting on Hannah''s shoulder. "I came to talk to you about the lies your father told me, but I see you''re busy entertaining other men."

Stefan immediately removed his hand from Hannah''s shoulder and stood up. "Alexander, calm down. We''re working together to—"

"Working together?" Alexander''s voice rose to a shout. "Is that what you call it? Moving in on my wife the moment my back is turned?"

"Your wife?" Stefan''s own anger began to rise. "You''re the one who destroyed your marriage with surveince and lies. You''re the one who chose revenge over love."

Alexander stepped further into the room, his hands clenched into fists. "And you think that gives you the right to swoop in andfort her? You think you can y the hero again?"

Camille stood up quickly, trying to position herself between the two men. "Alexander, stop. Stefan isn''t pursuing me. We''re investigating the allegations against Victoria, trying to find the truth about what really happened fifteen years ago."

"The truth?" Alexanderughed bitterly. "The truth is that Stefan Rodriguez will use any excuse to get close to you again. He''s manipting this entire situation to make himself look like your savior."

Hannah rose from her chair, her face pale with confusion and growing rm. "Mr. Pierce, you''re misunderstanding what you saw. Stefan and I were just "

"You''re defending him now?" Alexander''s attention turned to Hannah withser focus. "How long have you been working together? How long has this been going on?"

Stefan moved protectively closer to Hannah, his jaw tightening with anger. "Leave her out of this. Your problem is with me, not with Hannah."

"My problem is with anyone who helps destroy my marriage!" Alexander''s voice cracked with pain and rage. "I know what I saw, Stefan. I know what it looks like when a man is trying to seduce a woman."

"You don''t know anything," Stefan said, his voice deadly quiet. "You don''t know what loyalty looks like, or trust, or putting someone else''s happiness above your own revenge."

Alexander''s face twisted with fury. "Don''t lecture me about loyalty. You''re the one who cheated on Camille with her sister. You''re the one who destroyed her ability to trust anyone."

"And I''ve spent every day since then trying to make amends for that betrayal. Unlike you, who''s still choosing your vendetta over her wellbeing."

    "I''m fighting for justice!"

"You''re fighting for revenge based on lies someone fed you." Stefan stepped closer to Alexander, his own anger finally boiling over. "You''ve been manipted by whoever wants to destroy Victoria, and you''re too blinded by hate to see it."

Alexander''s control snappedpletely. "I''m tired of listening to your self- righteous..."

His fist connected with Stefan''s jaw before anyone could react. The sound of flesh hitting flesh echoed through the conference room like a gunshot.

Stefan staggered backward, his hand flying to his face where a red mark was already beginning to swell. Hannah gasped and moved toward him instinctively, her hands reaching out to check his injury.

"Stefan! Are you okay?" Hannah''s voice was filled with genuine concern as she gently touched his bruised jaw.

The tenderness in Hannah''s voice, the way she immediately moved tofort Stefan, the obvious care between them - it all hit Alexander like a second punch to the stomach.

"Oh my God," Alexander whispered, the reality of what he''d witnessed finally prating his jealous rage. "You''re not after Camille. You''re... you and Hannah..."

Camille was already reaching for the phone to call security. "That''s enough, Alexander. You need to leave."

"I didn''t know," Alexander said, his voice broken with shame and confusion. "I thought... when I saw him touching you..."

"He was touching me," Hannah said quietly, her arm still around Stefan''s shoulders as she examined his injury. "We''ve been working together. We''ve be... close."

Alexander stared at them, seeing clearly for the first time the way Hannah positioned herself

    protectively near Stefan, the wa

Stefan''s free hand found hers without conscious thought, the way they looked at each other

    with

something that was definitely more than professional respect.

"I''m sorry," Alexander said, but the words sounded hollow even to his own ears. "I didn''t understand. I thought..."

"You thought Stefan was like you," Camille said, her voice cold with disappointment. "You thought he would use any situation to try to win me back, because that''s what you would do."

Security guards appeared in the doorway, summoned by Camille''s call. "Ma''am? Is there a problem?"

"Mr. Pierce is leaving," Camille said firmly. "Please escort him from the building and revoke his ess credentials."

As the security guards moved toward Alexander, he looked desperately at Camille. "Please. I came here to tell you that your father showed me false documents. I came here to warn you that someone is still trying to destroy Victoria."

"By punching Stefan? By attacking the people trying to help us find the truth?" Camille''s voice carried more sadness than anger. "Alexander, you''ve lost the ability to distinguish between helping and hurting."

The security guards took Alexander''s arms gently but firmly. As they led him toward the door, he called back over his shoulder: "Camille, please. Someone is manipting all of us. The Guardian isn''t who I thought he was. You''re all in danger."

"The only danger we''re in is from you," Camille replied. "Stay away from us, Alexander. Stay away from me."

After Alexander was escorted from the building, the conference room fell into stunned silence. Hannah was still holding a bag of ice against Stefan''s swollen jaw, her fingers gentle as she adjusted the coldpress.

"I''m sorry," Stefan said quietly. "I''m sorry he hurt you by involving you in our history."

"He didn''t hurt me," Hannah replied. "But he hurt you, and that makes me angry."

Camille watched their interaction with a mixture of sadness and hope. Sadness for what her marriage had be, but hope for what she saw developing between Stefan and Hannah.

"You care about him," Camille said to Hannah. It wasn''t a question.

Hannah looked up, her cheeks flushing pink. "Yes. I do."

"And you?" Camille asked Stefan. "How do you feel about Hannah?"

Stefan met Hannah''s eyes, his expression vulnerable despite his bruised jaw: "I feel like maybe I''m learning what healthy love looks like. Love that doesn''t require grand gestures or dramatic sacrifices. Love that grows from respect and shared purpose."

Hannah smiled, her hand still gentle against his face. "I feel the same way."

Camille felt tears prick her eyes, but they weren''t tears of sadness. For the first time in months, she was witnessing something pure and hopeful growing from the wreckage of recent events.

"Alexander was right about one thing," Camille said quietly. "We are all in danger. But not from each other. From whoever has been manipting him, whoever wants to destroy Victoria and anyone who protects her."

Stefan nodded, wincing slightly at the movement. "Tomorrow we trace those offshore ounts. We find out who''s really behind this."

"Together," Hannah added, her fingers intertwining with Stefan''s.

As they cleaned up the conference room and prepared to leave, Camille felt a strange sense ofpletion Alexander''s jealous attack had

    revealed the growing connectiol.ne

between Stefan and Hannah had forced them to acknowledge feelings that might have remained

    unspoken for weeks longer.

Sometimes, Camille reflected, even destructive actions could lead to constructive

    realizations.

But as they walked toward the elevators, none of them noticed the figure watching

from the building across the street, or the telephoto lens capturing their every movement.

The Guardian had seen everything through the conference room windows. He had watched Alexander''s attack, witnessed the obvious connection between Stefan and Hannah, observed Camille''s protective response to her friends. Now he knew exactly which pressure points to use when the time came to destroy them all.
