She lowered her gaze, shes sweeping over her cheeks, and let out a quiet sigh. "Charlie, you need to be careful too. I met someone here—someone who probably snuck in years ago. He''s been hiding in in sight for four years now, and he''s already given up on ever getting out."
Before she could say more, someone walked over and gave her a sharp once- over. "You,e with me."
To fit in, ra had smeared her face with dark makeup. With only her bright eyes giving her away, no one would guess she was a woman.
She nodded at Charlie and trailed after the guard.
"There''s a big inspection tonight," the guard said. "Room 211, after ten. You''re patrolling this hallway. Don''t let anyone cause trouble."
The hallway was lined with tiny rooms, each holding people brought here for drug trials. This new batch was all settled in. There were supposed to be ten of them— now, with ra and Charlie, eight remained.
ra nodded and nced toward the far corner, where a little girl was huddled up.
The girl hadn''t moved since her physical. She just sat there, curled in the corner. Once the guard left, ra made her way over to the girl.
The little girl''s face was paper white, and there was a pool of blood underneath her.
ra''s chest tightened. She was about to crouch down and say something when another guard strode over.
"211, hand these out. Make sure everyone eats their fill tonight. The higher-ups areing to check soon, and everyone needs to look healthy."
ra lowered hershes. With peopleing and going nonstop, she couldn''t do anything else.
The little girl looked up, and the moment her eyes met ra''s, her pupils shrank. She suddenly started banging on the bars.
"I have something to say! Listen to me! One of the test subjects has slipped in among you!"
Her shout echoed down the hallway, drawing everyone''s attention.
ra froze, caughtpletely off guard. Her heart hammered in her chest.
The girl backed away, a sly smile on her lips as she pointed right at ra. "It''s her! Take her away!"
The patrolling guards rushed over, grabbing for ra.
She had no time to think. Exposed, ra spun and ran.
The little girl stood up, her foot smearing the blood beneath her. Everyone nearby shrank away, visibly shaken.
Someone came and unlocked the girl''s door. She stepped out, hands on her hips.
"There are two infiltrators this time—a man and a woman. Looks like they''re pretty capable."
ra had run far down the hallway,

but she could still hear the girl''s voice. Any sympathy she''d felt vanished. This girl was clearly a pro-probably nted here with every new batch, her job to sniff out anyone trying to sneak in. s
Charlie had never mentioned that.
ra drew a shaky breath. There was just no way to see something like thising.
Charlie was right. In here, you really couldn''t trust anyone.
She darted through the corridors, but security cameras tracked her every step, and gunshots echoed in: the distance. s
Out of options, she dove out a window and hid in a camera blind spot.
She crouched just beneath another window, catching snatches of conversation from inside.
"Looks like we caught another
infiltrator. Who knows how many times Little Ling has helped us out? She always pretends to be a kid-no one would guess she''s actually in her twenties just looks young
because of her illness."
