ra got back to her ce just as the rain starteding down hard. There was
a big, uneven boulder at the entrance—perfect for keeping dry. She scooted
further inside, the rainforest''s sticky dampness clinging to her clothes. Outside,
raindrops hammered the leaves, making a steady, almost soothing racket.
She and Dn had barely settled in when the others showed up.
Vivian came bursting in, dramatic as ever. “Ugh, where did this downpoure
from? Quick, someone get a fire going—I need to dry off!”
The shelter was big enough for everyone, and ra’s fire was right in the center.
Vivian, oblivious as usual, started ordering people to build another fire right next to
hers.
Kay spoke up, not even trying to hide her annoyance. “Can you move over a bit?”
Vivian shot a nce at Dn, her attitude switching to fake-shy in an instant. “No,
I want to stay right here.”
ra was already regretting her decision to stick around—now she was cornered
by a bunch of people she had zero patience for. She sighed and justy down,
using Dn’s knee as her pillow, eyes closed. Out of sight, out of mind.
Vivian’s fire got going a couple meters away, and soon she was ring at ra
and Dn, obviously annoyed at how close they were. Vivian couldn’t hold back:
“Aren’t you supposed to be Loue’s fiancé? Getting all snuggly with another
woman in public—aren’t you worried? Loue’s got a serious jealous streak. You’d
better be careful.”
Everyone knew Dn was a big deal, but the Chester family spoiled Loue
rotten. If you ever made her unhappy, your life was basically over.
ra heard Vivian’s jab and just rolled over, getting even morefortable on
Dn’sp. She reached up and yfully pinched his chin.
Dn nced at her, then back at the fire, totally unbothered.
ra smirked. “Who’s Loue? Never heard of her.”
Vivian’s cheeks turned red. “Come on, Dn’s famous in North America! He even
had a special interview on TV. Don’t pretend we don’t know who he is!”
ra thought back to those two years Dn spent overseas for rehab—he’d
worked himself to exhaustion even then.
She lowered her eyes and let her hand fall away from his chin, her voice soft. “He
is Dn, but he’s not anyone’s fiancé. He’s my husband. We’re married.”
Then she closed her eyes again, like the conversation was over.
Vivian looked like she’d just been struck by lightning. No way! How could Dn be
married? Just a few days ago, Loue was still bragging about how Dn would
be flying over to marry her in less than a month.
Vivian took a deep breath and looked straight at Dn. “Is that true?”
Dn usually couldn’t be bothered to respond to anyone, but this time, almost
against his nature, he gave a quiet, “Yeah.”
Vivian frowned, looking disappointed, then let out a heavy sigh. “Guess Loue’s
been lying to me. Maybe she really does have her eye on you. Well, you’d better
be careful. No matter how tough you are, if the Chester family decides to step in,
I’m not sure your wife will survive it.”
ra could tell—Vivian might be clueless and a bit hot-headed, but she wasn’t
truly mean.
The one to watch was Mya, who’d been quiet this whole time. Earlier, when things
got tense, she’d wasted no time dropping Loue’s name, and right away, the
other guys from the North American families had turned on Loue.
