Ryan didn''t even get the words out before gunshots shattered the air.
Between the rain hammering down and the rapid-fire cracks, he couldn''t tell which sound hit first.
In his twenty years, he''d never seen anything like this. Not in real life. Not even on TV.
Less than three minutester, every one of those thugs was on the ground-gone without even getting to bark a threat.
Ryan just stood there, stunned, wondering if he was hallucinating.
Every shot had been a headshot. Not one missed.
He slowly sat up, barely breathing, afraid even to blink.
That couldn''t be ra. No way.
But the figure moved closer, slim but somehow as solid and intimidating as a mountain.
His mouth opened, but tears spilled out before he could say a word.
Shit...
That wasn''t ra. That was Death itself.
He sniffled hard, trying to pull himself together, and finally looked up. "C-ra?"
ra crouched next to him, brows drawn tight at how pathetic he must look.
He braced himself for a p-honestly, he kind of deserved it—but it didn''te. The wait was almost worse than the blow.
"ra, you should just hit me. I always drag you down. I''m useless, I—”
He didn''t get to finish. She grabbed a knife from the floor-one of the ones the men had dropped-and sliced through the ropes tied around his wrists.
His ribs ached, sharp and deep. He leaned on the wall to push himself up, sweat sticking his shirt to his back. The rain outside made everything colder.
Ryan wanted to cry again. He hadn''t seen ra in so long. After that night in the motel, she''d just disappeared. Dn had hidden her away somewhere, and nobody could find her.
"ra... What happened to your mouth?" His voice cracked at the sight of blood at the corner of her lips.
She shrugged, taking a few steps forward. "Dog bite."
She didn''t wait, just stopped and nced back. "Youing or not?"
Ryan shivered, limping along the wall to follow her. "Are you really my ra?
''Cause you... I mean, you seem..."
Different. Like someone else entirely.
But then, ra always had these moments. Serious, unreadable, like she was made of steel.
ra didn''t answer. She just kept walking down the corridor.
They reached a fork. The tower split into two exits-left and right.
She''de from the left; there was a car waiting for her outside. But she turned and headed right instead.
Ryan hobbled after her, confused.
"ra, have you been with Dn this whole time? Did he hurt you? Did he forge mouth. bet he did that. always
you? Your there was
something off about him. The way he looked at you-it wasn''t normal." Cóntent
ra stopped, pressing her fingers to her forehead, like she was trying to squeeze the chaos out.
Whatever drugs they''d given her still hadn''t worn off. She felt wired and restless. "ra..."
Ryan was about to ask more, but suddenly ra copsed.
He panicked. "ra!"
Ignoring the pain in his ribs, he
scrambled over and knelt besided sweat sticking his hair to his

"Don''t do this, ra, please—”
He was about to lose it when her eyes finally opened, and she shot him an

He snapped his mouth shut.
"Let me lie here for a minute. My head''s killing me."

In the car, Dn sat back, watching the rain m against the window, saying
nothing.
He''d been like that since ra got out and disappeared down that long, dark tunnel.
It was like somebody had hit pause on him.
Aiden, up front, didn''t dare say a word.
The engine was off. They waited.
An hour crawled by before Dn finally pulled his eyes away from the rain and shut them.
"Let''s go."
But deep down, he couldn''t help wondering what exactly was he still waiting for?
