Melvin looked up, curious. “What’s up?”
Jessica gave a shy grin. “Back in high school, I thought you two were a good match.”
Melvin’s face froze. “Me and… Gerard?”
Jessica nodded, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Remember sports day? Gerard twisted his ankle in the long jump, and you ran to help him when he couldn’t walk.”
Melvin shrugged. “He’s my friend. What’s wrong with helping?”
Jessicaughed. “That’s not it. Most guys I knew back then were rough with each other. You were so caring—it stood out.”
Melvin stared, lost for words.
“It wasn’t just me,” Jessica added, her voice light. “Half the girls in ss were rooting for you two.”
Back in high school, Melvin and Gerard were practically glued at the hip—eating, studying, and hanging out together in the dorms. With their good looks and kinder vibes than most boys, it was easy to see why people got ideas. For a while, they were the talk of the ss.
“Howe I didn’t know?” Melvin searched his memory, bing through every detail, but couldn’t recall even the faintest clue.
“Well, you two weren’t actually a couple, so obviously we couldn’t be too obvious about shipping it,” Jessica said lightly, as if it were nothing. “It was just harmless gossip between a few of us.”
Keeping her little fantasy ship to herself and not bothering the people involved—that was just basic courtesy.
“And now?” Melvin asked. “Do you still ship me and him?”
“Of course not!” Jessica said seriously. “You’re mine!”
Melvin gave a small nod. He had already made up his mind—if Jessica dared to say yes, he was ready to go find Gerard and knock him t. That would end it once and for all.
After dinner, the two of them took a stroll along the sidewalk. Even with her hand resting snugly in Melvin’s, Jessica still couldn’t quite shake the feeling that it all felt a little too surreal.
After waiting over a decade, she never thought it would actuallye together this easily.

The next day.
With less than two hours to go before their meet-up, Jessica quickly changed into a sleek outfit from a niche designer and put together a wless makeup look.
Watching her fuss around, Melvin couldn’t help feeling confused. She already looked stunning without makeup—why spend over an hour applying something so subtle?
“How do I look?” Jessica asked after applying her lipstick, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.
Melvin offered a sincerepliment. “Drop dead gorgeous.”
“Feels like something’s missing,” Jessica murmured, examining herself critically in the mirror.
Her makeup was impable. The earrings were a perfect match for both her look and the shape of her face.
