?Chapter 1441:
“Exactly.”
He took the phone, curiosity bubbling beneath his usual grin. Because of the vague contact name, he didn’t realize who was on the other end.
Lawrence lowered his voice. “Hello?”
“Who are you?” Melvin’s voice was sharp, suspicion blooming fast. He knew Jessica. She never let anyone else answer her calls.
“You’re calling to figure out who I am?” Lawrence shot back, his voice sharp but yful.
Melvin, usually calm as a cucumber, let a spark of emotion slip through. He paused for a moment before asking, “Where’s Jessica? Get her on the phone.”
“She’s in the shower,” Lawrence said, cool as a breeze.
After answering, he switched the phone to speaker mode so Jessica could listen in.
Melvin’s feelings stirred like a storm, but after a beat, he asked, “Are you her family or something?”
“Family?” Lawrence replied with an easy smile, his voice smooth as silk. “I only met her today.”
He wasn’t lying. He had just crossed paths with Jessica that very day.
Jessica shed him a thumbs-up, clearly pleased with his quick thinking.
“Tell her to call me back when she’s done. I’ll be waiting,” Melvin said, cutting the conversation short before hanging up.
Jessica had no ns to ring him back. She tossed her phone aside and let it be.
An hourter, fresh from her shower, Jessica sprawled across the bed. Worried Melvin might wait up all night, she fired off a quick text. “I’ve said all I needed to say. There’s nothing more to talk about.”
Message sent, she silenced her phone and drifted off to sleep.
Barely a moment after lying down, she peeked at her phone. Sure enough, Melvin was calling again.
Her brow furrowed. She thought it over and decided to let it ring.

Desperate to find her but clueless about her whereabouts, he dialed Freya. It waste, and Freya was already fast asleep. Her phone buzzed, and she instinctively burrowed closer to Ellis, tugging the nket over her ears.
Ellis felt the phone’s persistent hum. He meant to decline the call but noticed it was Melvin. In all their years, Melvin had never called Freya in the dead of night, no matter the urgency.
ncing at Freya, sleeping like a log, Ellis ended the call and texted Melvin, “What’s going on? Freya’s out cold.”
Melvin, realizing his mistake, quickly replied, “It’s nothing major.”
Ellis wasn’t buying it. “You don’t call thiste for kicks. Spill it.”
Melvin hesitated. Thinking of Jessica, he texted, “I need my boss to help me track Jessica down. She went into the subway earlier, and I lost her.”
