Chapter 1438

    ?Chapter 1438:

“Thank you!” Jessica replied warmly and cheerfully.

The rest of the day drifted by without any drama.

Jessica chatted with them for a while, then excused herself and settled into the living room. With herptop open, she turned her attention to Jack’s startup. The problems waiting for her weren’t the end of the world, but they did need some work. She knew it would take a bit of determination to sort them out. Turning a profit would take another three months at the very least.

By six in the evening, Lawrence and Jacob had taken over the kitchen to make dinner. Jessica had meant to lend a hand, but her phone rang. Jack’s name lit up the screen.

    “Hello?”

“Jessica, Melvin just threatened me,” Jack blurted out. His voice shook, as if he were moments from crying. “Do you have any idea what he did when he showed up this afternoon?”

“Did he hit you?” Jessica asked, not really believing it. She doubted Melvin would every a hand on him.

“He shoved a bunch of photos in my face—pictures of me with my girlfriends. He started demanding answers, wanted to know why I’d cheat on you,” Jack huffed. “I told him it was my business and that you didn’t care, so why should he? But then—”

“What happened next?” Jessica prompted, a hint of amusement in her tone.

“He smashed my favorite car right in front of me!” Jack practically howled. “He told me if I kept up my nonsense, I’d end up just like the car!”

Jessica didn’t pick up on any real threat. She said calmly, “Rx. He’s just trying to scare you. Don’t worry about the car—I’ll pay for the repairs.”

Jack went silent, stunned. Money wasn’t what had him rattled. It was his own safety.

“Want me to send you the photos so you can see for yourself how brutal he was?” Jack pressed, clearly desperate for sympathy.

“He’s only putting on a show. Trust me, as long as you don’t start anything, he won’t hurt you,” Jessica assured him, fully convinced Melvin wouldn’t cross that line.

“I’m done with this. I want no part of it anymore!” Jack broke. “I quit.”

“Could you repeat that?” Jessica asked, thinking she must have heard wrong.

“You can’t imagine how scary he was when he walked in today. Most of the time, he’s cool and collected. But today, just being around him was enough to make my skin crawl.” Jack sounded frazzled. “If he ever catches me with any of my girlfriends again, he’ll pin me down and actually beat me up!”

Jessica let the silence stretch for a moment. She pressed her fingers to her temples, sighing. It wasn’t like she could conjure up a fake divorce or suddenly cast someone else as her husband.<fnfa4a> Readplete version only at f?i?n?d?n?o?v?e?l?</fnfa4a>

“Forget it. I’ll take care of thepany’s problems myself. Just let me know when you’re around, so we can stage that divorce and be done with all this,” Jack said, rushing on.

“You’re not afraid that after we divorce, he’ll stille after you?” Jessica asked carefully, searching for a way out of the mess she’d created.

Jack froze. That didn’t sound impossible at all.
