    “Cheer up,” Jack said, hands shoved in his pockets as he eyed her sulking expression. “Didn’t I promise to make hime crawling back? I meant it.”


    “What if you can’t deliver?” Jessica asked, her confidence dimmed.


    “Then I’ll nobly marry you myself,” Jack said with a wink. “You wouldn’t exactly be settling.”


    Jessica gave him a swift kick. “Get lost.”


    “There are enough women lined up to marry me,” Jack said, smug as ever.


    Yana rolled her eyes and followed him into City Hall.


    The moment she stepped inside, her thoughts drifted to how she once imagined marrying Melvin one day.


    Jack noticed her distant look and handed her the fake marriage certificate he had prepared. “Here, our marriage certificate.”


    “What do I need to do now?” Jessica asked tly.


    “Nothing much. Just hand me one of your ess cards,” Jack said, finally turning serious. “You told Melvin that’s where we live now, so I need to drop by asionally to keep up appearances.”


    Jessica took out a card and passed it to him. “The door code is my birthday.”


    “Noted,” Jack replied, pocketing it.


    After staying in the office a little longer than necessary, they left together.


    As soon as they exited City Hall, Jack turned to her. “Feel like grabbing a drink?”


    “No,” Jessica answered without hesitation.


    “Come on, I’ll call Haley too,” Jack persisted. As annoying as he could be, sometimes his timing was oddly considerate. “It’s your first official day as a heartbroken woman.”

    “I mean it,” Jack said, grinning as always. “Tell me more about Melvin.”


    “He was my ssmate,” Jessica said.


    “I don’t care about the past,” Jack cut in. “What’s he now?”


    Jessica looked at him and replied, “President of Anita International Group.”


    Jack stopped cold. “You’re kidding.”


    “Do I seem like the joking type?” Jessica said calmly.


    Jack’s face turned thoughtful. “Then I think I know why he won’tmit, even though it’s obvious he likes you.”


    Jessica stared at him. “Why?”


    “He’s the head of Anita International. If he so much as breathes like he’s single, women will line up from five counties away,” Jack said, more serious now despite his usual casual tone. “Giving up the whole sea for one fish? Some would call it foolish.”
