?Chapter 1408:
As fate would have it, Rnd and Lena were both home, lounging in the warmth of their living room.
Melvin stepped inside at their invitation, his polished shoes clicking on the hardwood. Rnd and Lena, aware of their daughter Jessica’s affection for him, greeted him with practiced smiles, their courtesy masking a guarded interest.
A maid glided in, setting a tray of steaming coffee on the table. Rnd leaned forward, his fingers drumming lightly on the armrest. “So, Melvin, what brings you here?” he asked, his tone even but probing.
Without a flicker of hesitation, Melvin dropped the bombshell. “Jessica ns to marry Jack Bowman tomorrow.” His words sliced through the air, betraying no hint of guarding Jessica’s secret.
Rnd froze, his coffee cup halfway to his lips. Shock painted his face.
Lena’s eyes widened, her hand pausing over the sugar bowl.
Both of them looked puzzled.
Lena blinked, as if the words had misfired in her ears. “Wait,” she said, her voice cautious, “you are certain she is marrying Jack Bowman?”
Her mind raced. Jessica had always carried a torch for Melvin—how could this be?
Melvin nodded, his handsome features calm but resolute. “She told me herself. She has already moved in with him.”
Rnd set his cup down with a clink, his thoughts scrambling to keep pace. “Hold on, let me wrap my head around this.” He rubbed his temple, frowning.
Leaning forward, Melvin’s hands tightened briefly at his sides, a flicker of nerves betraying hisposure. “She confessed her feelings to me, but I turned her down,” he said. “In a fit of anger, she called Jack and dered she would marry him.”
Rnd’s eyes narrowed. “Why did you turn her down?”
Melvin hesitated, his gaze dropping to the floor. “Personal reason,” he said.
“What reason?” Rnd pressed, his jaw tightening.

Lena shot her husband a sharp look, her hand slicing through the air. “If he says personal, Rnd, it means he does not wish to share.” Her heart sank, imagining Jessica’s pain. She knew her daughter’s devotion to Melvin ran deep. “Why must you push him?”
Rnd’s face reddened. “He rejected my daughter. Am I not allowed to ask why?” He gestured broadly, frustration spilling over.
Melvin’s eyes fell, guilt etching lines across his face. “I am sorry,” he murmured, his voice heavy.
Rnd opened his mouth, but the words caught in his throat, trapped by the weight of the apology.
Shifting in his seat, Melvin pressed on. “It is my fault she is hurt. But right now, the priority is stopping her from rushing into a reckless marriage.” He met their eyes, resolute. “I hope you will talk to her, convince her to reconsider this choice she might regret.”
Rnd started to respond. “She—”
Lena raised a hand, cutting him off. “We will handle it when shees home. We will speak with her properly.”
