Jack jerked his chin toward Melvin. “Him.”
“He is…” Jessica began to exin who Melvin really was.
“He doesn’t need to know,” Melvin cut in smoothly, unfazed by whatever people said about him.
Jessica didn’t quite get what he meant. But Melvin gave her a reassuring nce.
Jack stepped forward slowly, that same smug grin ying on his face, and said to Melvin with deliberate casualness, “Look, I don’t mind guys who live off others—everyone’s got to make ends meet somehow. But this…” He came to a stop right in front of Melvin.
Melvin stayedposed. “This what?”
“Losing to a guy like you? That really ticks me off.” Jack clearly hadn’te to terms with it.
“Well, sounds like you’ll just have to suck it up,” Melvin replied with ease.
Jessica blinked—was she hearing him right? She’d never heard him talk like that before. Jack looked thrown.
Everyone around them fell silent.
They were momentarily stunned. No one had expected Melvin toe out swinging like that.
Jack’s friends wandered over, each wearing a smirk like they were watching some juicy drama unfold. “You’ve got guts, man.”
“Jack…” the goon who’d been knocked around earlier piped up, his voice shaking.
“Shut it!” Jack snapped, disgusted. “I’ll deal with youter.”
The man looked like he was about to cry. He wanted to shout that this Melvin guy wasn’t just some pretty face—he was a straight-up beast.
Melvin had no interest in dragging this out with them.
He gave everyone a quick once-over, then took Jessica’s hand and said in a firm, matter-of-fact tone, “Let’s go home.”

“Okay.” Jessica followed him without hesitation.
Jack gave a signal, and his group quickly closed in around Melvin.
He strolled over with his usualid-back air, hands tucked in his pockets. “Why the rush? Jessica’s like a little sister to me. Aren’t you going to treat her big brother to a meal?”
“He’s your brother?” Melvin asked Jessica, deadpan.
“No way.” Jessica gave Melvin a look and yed along, amused. “Please. If he were my brother, wouldn’t that make my dad setting us up a crime?”
Melvin nced at Jack with a level gaze. “You hear that?”
“Then I guess I’ll give your dad a call,” Jack said, fiddling with his phone. “Might as well update him about everything going on here.”
There was no way Jessica could just stand by and let Jack make that call.
She froze, her grip tightening on Melvin’s hand instinctively.
If her dad caught wind of this, he might show up on the spot. Not only would her earlier lie be blown wide open, but he might also let slip that she’d deliberately moved in with Melvin. And if that happened, there’d be no hope left of pursuing Melvin properly.
