    Jessica pressed her lips into a thin line. Her n hadn’t worked on him at all. “Just treat me like your girlfriend, starting now!” she tried again, unwilling to give up.


    Melvin faltered, recalling something Gerard had said. When he looked at her, his voice grew gentler. “Is it because you like me?”


    “Absolutely, I do.” Jessica gave a nod and replied without hesitation. “Not only you, but Gerard too. Both of you are good to me. How could I not feel that way?”


    “I was asking if you liked me as more than a friend.”


    “No, not in that way.”


    “You mean it?”


    “Not at all.” Jessica kept her voice steady, though her heart hammered in her chest.


    Melvin was not ready to let it go. “Then why are you so set on having me y the boyfriend role?”


    “I just want to see what a rtionship is like.” Melvin’s stubbornness felt impossible. “If it turns out to be wonderful, maybe marriage won’t scare me anymore. If not, I’ll just stick to being single.”


    “No.” Melvin shook his head and stood his ground.


    A sigh escaped Jessica. “And why not?”


    “You’d be testing it out with me, so how you feel would only ever be about us,” Melvin exined, his tone unyielding. “If you ended up thinking marriage wasn’t worth it just because of our experience, that wouldn’t be fair to the next guy.”


    Jessica’s hands balled into fists, and she took a steadying breath. Would she have to wrestle the truth into him herself?


    The determination on her face spoke volumes, and he could tell what she was thinking. “You wouldn’t stand a chance if you tried to fight me.”


    “Care to test that theory?”


    “Believe me.”

    Annoyance flickered across her face as she checked the caller ID. Seeing who it was, her irritation only deepened. “What do you want?”


    “Uncle Rnd mentioned you’re still single,” her cousin’s voice came through, well-meaning but clueless. “Want me to set you up with someone?”


    “I’m fine, thanks!”


    “Are you sure?”
