Spotting Greta and Trent, Freya waved them over. “Greta!”

Just as she moved to join them, Ellis picked up his jacket and tossed it over her head. “Come with me to a shop.”

Freya stopped short, pletely thrown off. She yanked the jacket away, her brow furrowing. “What for?”

“You ruined my watch,” Ellis said, settling his jacket over her shoulders before raising his left wrist. “You need to make it up to me.”

Freya blinked at him, confusion written across her face. “Are you saying I should actually pay for that?”

    “It’s just a watch. Don’t be dramatic.”

“I can cover it for her.”

Several boys chimed in immediately in agreement.

Ellis looked around, his calm demeanor unwavering. “Are you all nning to handle her training while you’re at it?” he asked in a steady, measured tone.

The group fell silent. No one was willing to volunteer for that.

Ellis then started toward the door.

It took Freya a few steps to realize he might be serious. She slipped the jacket from her shoulders, ready to hand it back and send him the money for the watch.

Before she could take another step, Ellis leaned in and spoke softly. “You’ve got something on your pants.”

The simple remark rooted her to the spot. Her mind flickered back to the moment he had dropped his jacket over her head, and she couldn’t hide her unease.

About twenty minutester, they arrived at a shop.

Ellis left her at the entrance, exchanging a few quiet words with the shopkeeper before slipping away.

Freya, not knowing anyone or anything about the ce, stayed where she was. The shopkeeper, recalling Ellis’s words, handed her a pack of sanitary pads and pointed toward the restroom.

By the time Ellis returned, she was already finished. He handed her a small bottle and a few cotton swabs. “Use this to clean your pants. Once you put it on, dry the spot with a hairdryer and you’ll be fine.”

“Thanks for the help.” Freya took them from him.

The shopkeeper shot Ellis a knowing smile, then led Freya to a small room in the back and passed her a hairdryer.

A short whileter, she reappeared and teased him, “Is she your girlfriend?”

“No. She’s only a new recruit here for the selection.” Ellis met her gaze without a hint of emotion. She let it go after that.

A few minutester, Freya stepped out from the back, her pants free of any stains. Ellis thanked the shopkeeper, then motioned for Freya to follow him out.

Freya hesitated. “Weren’t you serious about the watch?”

“I was only joking,” Ellis replied, soundingpletely at ease.

He had only needed a reason to pull her away from the group. Although he wasn’t good at reading girls, her awkwardness had been clear from the start. A girl her age was bound to feel self-conscious, and he couldn’t pretend not to notice.
