    “By the way,” n tried again, tossing out a lifeline. “Have you picked a date to pop the question? Need a hand?”


    “Not yet.” Ellis’s answer was vague but thoughtful. “Once the rings are ready, I’ll talk to her friends, pick a day, and n a surprise she won’t seeing.”


    “I get it…” n muttered, lost in thought. Why wasn’t Ellis curious? Wasn’t he supposed to be sharp as a tack?


    Ellis nced at him, his face calm but focused. “Something eating at you?”


    “Nah.” n’s denial came too fast, like a reflex.


    His mind was racing. He’d been so obvious—shouldn’t Ellis at least ask what was up?


    But he’d misjudged. Outside of Freya, Ellis didn’t meddle in other people’s business. If n wasn’t ready to talk, he wouldn’t push. That was just his way.


    So they kept eating, the clink of cutlery filling the silence.


    Ellis’s thoughts wandered to Freya. Should he call her first or just show up?


    n, meanwhile, was stuck on one thought: Ellis was stubborn as an ox.


    After dinner, they parted ways.


    n tried onest hint as they left, but Ellis didn’t bite.


    “If you don’t want to say it, don’t,” Ellis said with a shrug. “Not everything needs to beid bare.”


    Frustrated, n climbed into his car and sped off.


    Back at the hotel, he was about to head up to Freya’s suite to spill the beans when he spotted Ellis standing outside her door, hand raised to knock.

    He whipped out his phone and fired off a quick text to Freya.


    Then he strolled over, casual as ever. “Ellis? Why are you here?”


    “I came to see Freya,” Ellis said simply. Right then, Freya opened the door.


    Seeing both men, she stepped aside with a smile. “Come on in.”


    “Work done?” Ellis asked. He’d given her a heads-up about his visit, so she wasn’t caught off guard.


    “Not quite,” Freya said, slipping into her role wlessly as she led them to the suite’s living room. “I’m still sorting some papers Melvin dropped off. He’s got a big meeting tomorrow, and I’m helping him prep.”


    Ellis and n nced at the documents spread out on the table.


    n’s mind reeled. Hadn’t she said this trip wasn’t about work? The files looked legit—too legit to be a cover story.


    “Make yourselvesfortable. Drinks are over there,” Freya said, staying in character, not giving Ellis a hint of her real ns. “I’ve got to wrap this up first.”


    n shot a quick look at Ellis.


    Ellis, sensing her act but not calling her out, grabbed two sses of water and settled onto the sofa, content to wait until she was ready.
