Citrine let out a sharp, mockingugh. "You can dress yourselves up all you want, but it doesn''t hide how desperately sycophantic you both are."
She nced at Wade with warmth in her eyes. "My brother is a Saunders. If he wants, C. Corp is as much his as anyone''s. He never has to worry about his future our family will always have his back."
"And as for your im that he''s done nothing with his life-well, from what I know, Wade''s won more than his fair share of racing championships. Not long ago, he even beat Jonah at Skysunder Ridge. He''s talented. If you think that makes him useless, then what does that make the Jonah who lost to him? Trash?"
Wade blinked, his eyes suddenly misty.
In all these years, no one had ever stood up for him so openly, right in front of everyone.
He might act carefree and irreverent, but deep down, Wade was just a boy who longed to be loved.
The cks'' faces twisted with embarrassment and anger, neither managing to say a word.
Both of them turned to Jonah, their voices anxious. "Mr. Griffin, we swear we didn''t mean anything by it."
But Jonah didn''t so much as nce their way. The moment Citrine had spoken up, his attention had been fixed entirely on her.
Seeing Jonah remain silent, the cks panicked, falling over themselves to exin. "Mr. Griffin, really, we meant nothing by it-please, don''t be upset!"
Jonah just felt annoyed. He stood, pushing past the cks with irritation.
He''d always thought the pair were pathetic brown-nosers-they were exhausting to be around. With a snap of impatience, he barked, "Get out of my way. Stop bothering me."
He straightened his jacket and, with a hint of awkwardness, turned to Citrine. "What are you doing here?"
Ever since he''d learned she''d saved him by sending the Skysunder Ridge patrol, Jonah hadn''t been able to keep up his cold front with Citrine.
And now that he knew she was the legendary racer at Skysunder Ridge, he couldn''t help but admire her-though pride wouldn''t let him show it.
"Wade''s my brother. Why wouldn''t I be here?" Citrine replied, matching his
bluntness. She knew Jonah had a grudge against Wade, so she made no effort to be polite.
Jonah''s eyes darkened.
Of all people, why did the famous racer have to be his archrival Wade''s sister?
It was a real dilemma.
With a huff, he muttered, "Don''t think just because you saved mest time, I''m going to start being nice to you."
Citrine stared at him for a split second. Was something wrong with this guy?
She shook her head and turned away, refusing to waste another word.
Looking to the rest of the ck family''s guests, she spoke coolly, "I think everyone''s heard enough. obvious the cks only consider Mr. Griffin a guest-people like us aren''t wee here. No point in staying where we''re not wanted."
She shot a look at Wade and Curry. "Come on, let''s go somewhere people actually want us."
Wade and Curry both nodded.
Citrine faced Mr. Gorman and Mrs. ck and offered them a polite, chilly smile.
"Well, thank you for your hospitality, but we''ll be leaving now."
With that, she led Wade and Curry toward the exit.
The cks watched them go, faces thunderous and gray.
But just then, Jonah called out to Citrine.
The cks assumed he wanted to stop her, but the next words out of his mouth
nearly made them faint with rage.
Jonah looked at Citrine with an air of
prideful reluctance. "If you really
don''t want me to stay here, I
suppose can do you the favor and
leave too." His
His voice was quiete
than usual, betraying his
embarrassment.
Citrine blinked, immediately
recognizing that Jonah was just
looking for a way to save face. She hadn''t nned to respond, but Something about his awkward posturing feminded her of the haughty cat at home. So, she nodded.
