    Anger simmered within Eileen, but she knew that pushing Bryan now would only lead to him gaining an advantage over her. So, she swallowed her anger.


    “Gabri ims to have eight pieces of candy this month. Did you give her any? Remember, too much sugar is bad for her teeth,” Eileen said, a hint of worry in her voice. “We can’t keep sneaking her sweets because of this. It’s not good for her.”


    A yful smile touched Bryan’s lips. “Don’t worry; I haven’t given her any. She just thinks she is getting the candy.”


    Eileen chuckled, turning to gently caress the sleeping Gabri. “She has clearly inherited your cleverness.”


    “You think you are smarter than me?” Bryan said, his tone shifting. “The tracker I ced in Raymond’s car went dark the moment it was removed. Did you honestly believe you could conceal that from me?”


    Eileen’s eyes widened in surprise. “But that was Raymond’s idea!” She distinctly remembered praising Raymond for his quick thinking at that time.


    Bryan didn’t say anything else. He switched off the bedsidemp and settled into the bed, drawing Eileen close. His strong hand rested protectively over her rounded belly. The warmth of his dry palm radiated through her, spreading aforting heat from her belly throughout her entire body.


    Their baby had begun its first fluttering movements a few days prior, and since then, Bryan had developed a nightly ritual of cing his hand on Eileen’s belly before sleep, as if connecting with the tiny life growing within her.


    Eileen thought Bryan was trying to make the most of this pregnancy, cherishing every second he had to connect with their baby. He seemed determined to do everything he had missed out on when she had been pregnant with Gabri. He would even leave work early just to share stories with the baby, gently lifting Eileen’s shirt to get closer.

    Even though Bryan was incredibly careful about what Eileen ate, she sometimes snuck in a forbidden treat when he wasn’t looking.


    Right now, all that upied Eileen’s mind was the delicious cake waiting for her in the fridge. She closed her eyes, trying to decide if she should grab some extra sleep or get up early for a sneaky slice of cake before going back to bed.


    She worried that if she woke up toote, Gabri might eat the cake. Knowing how much Ruby doted on Gabri, Eileen was sure Ruby would give Gabri the cake if she asked.


    Eileen shifted, reaching for her phone to set an rm.


    But just as she lifted her head, Bryan leaned in and kissed her, stopping her. His lips were cool against hers, carrying the faintest trace of alcohol and a taste she knew well.


    Pushing Bryan back, Eileen fixed her gaze on his lips for a moment, a flicker of confusion crossing her face before anger red. “Did you eat my cake?” she demanded.


    “Wasn’t it for me?” Bryan asked, his hand reaching out to capture her wrist, his thumb softly stroking her skin.


    “Certainly not!” Eileen said, her teeth clenching as she red at him. “Didn’t you have enough to eat at dinner?”
