    Some passersby quickly recognized Eileen and began whispering among themselves. The crowd was filled with harsh judgments. Rumors about the strained rtionship between Eileen and her biological mother had been circting for a while.


    Now, seeing the scene in person, people noticed how Eileen’s detachment and coldness toward her biological mother were even more pronounced than they had expected.


    “Shut up!” Ruby, unable to tolerate the disparaging remarks aimed at Eileen, shouted at Denise, “Eileen isn’t even your daughter!”


    The street bustled with a sea of people. Eileen felt as if she were drifting in a bubble, disconnected from reality. She blinked, her gaze shifting from Denise, whoy sprawled on the ground, to Ruby.


    “Mom, what did you just say?”


    “Stop talking nonsense!” Denise shot to her feet. “Ruby, you can’t just spread lies because you’re envious that I have such a wealthy daughter… I’ll sue you!”


    Ruby opened her mouth, but hesitated, unsure whether revealing the truth would help, especially with Eileen staring at her in shock.


    “Sue her,” Eileen said, her voice icy and emotionless. “Go ahead and sue her. I want the truth toe out. Let’s see where this leads.”


    Denise flinched under Eileen’s cold stare, her voice trembling. “I-I just said that offhand,” she stuttered. “Don’t buy into Ruby’s lies. She’s trying to tear us apart, and that’s because she’s scared you might get me a vi. People show their true colors when they’re afraid. You think she’s been kind, but…”


    The rest of Denise’s words were drowned out by the unyielding intensity of Eileen’s gaze. She had heard these words countless times before.


    “I’m not lying,” Ruby said calmly, her voice steady. “Denise, if you’re so sure, why don’t you prove it with a paternity test? Show everyone the truth.” She noticed the stunned look on Eileen’s face, knowing that her point hadnded. There was no need for further secrecy.

    Denise’s face drained of color. She ced her hands firmly on her hips and yelled, “No, she’s my daughter! We don’t need a paternity test. You must be crazy! I’m done talking to you!”


    Without another word, she fled.


    Eileen guided Ruby back to the car, and she climbed in as well. But she sat in silence, her eyes fixed on the busy street outside.


    Before Eileen could gather her thoughts or speak, Ruby broke the silence. “After I was with your father, it took me a while to find out you weren’t his biological daughter…”


    Years ago, after Lowell Curtis and Denise had been married for a long time without having a child, they sought medical advice. The tests showed no obvious issues with their health, but the doctors discovered a gic mismatch and rmended artificial insemination.
