Lately, Blythe and Oliver hadn''t bothered her at all-Calliope was almost starting to forget they existed.
She''d asked someone to look into Jett and his wife, just to see if there was any chance they might be rted by blood. So far, though, she hadn''t heard anything definite.
Still, whenever she looked at them, she couldn''t help but feel a strange mix of emotions.
Mrs. White, in particr, looked so much like her.
Calliope found herself staring at Jett and his wife from across the room.
Maybe she was being too obvious, just openly watching them, because it didn''t take long for them to notice and look right back at her.
Their eyes met for a second.
She didn''t know what their deal was. All she really knew was that they were Blythe''s adoptive parents.
As for whether they were actually rted to her somehow? That was a whole different mystery.
She kept her expression neutral as they started walking directly toward her.
She was caught off guard as they stopped a few feet away.
"Excuse me, miss," Jett said, pausing in front of her with a thoughtful look. "Were you just looking at us?"
Calliope nodded. "Yeah, I was."
"Is there something we can help you with?" he asked, a little puzzled. "Did my wife
or I do something wrong? You seemed to be watching us pretty intently."
He sounded genuinely curious.
Mrs. White was looking at Calliope too, and she seemed surprised. There was definitely a resemn between them the same kind of eyes, the same curve to their smiles.
“It''s nothing, really,” Calliope said with a small smile. “Your wife just looks awfully familiar to me. You''re Jett White, right?"
"You know me?" Jett raised his eyebrows in surprise.
"We met once, from a distance. A friend of mine pointed you out," Calliope
exined. "But I doubt you noticed me at the time."
"I probably didn''t," Jett said, smiling back. "If I''d seen you, I''d have remembered―
you look a lot like my wife. Hard to miss."
Mrs. Whiteughed softly. "No wonder you thought I looked familiar. I think you
look interesting, too. We do look a bit alike."
"I''ll take that as apliment," Calliope replied, nodding.
"Apliment?" Mrs. White looked amused.
"Of course. I mean, you''re a beautiful woman," Calliope said with a wink.
Mrs. White''s smile warmed. "You''re quite lovely yourself, dear."
Just then, Blythe''s voice rang out. "Mom! Dad!" she called, running over and throwing her arms around Jett.
When Blythe saw Calliope, her eyes
narrowed for just a split
second only Calliope seemed to
notice the flicker of suspicion. But by
the time Blythe turned away, her
face was all sweetness again.
"Blythe!" Mrs. White ruffled Blythe''s hair, her eyes full of affection. "What''s up,
sweetheart? Weren''t you ying with your friends?"
"I was! But I wanted to hang out with you and Dad too!" Blythe said, pouting just a little. "I can''t just ignore you two!"
"Silly girl," Mrs. White chuckled. "You go have fun. Don''t worry about us-your
dad and I can keep ourselves entertained."
"I know, I know," Blythe insisted. "But
I still want to spend more time with
you guys! I''m always so busy, and I barely get to see you. Now that I finally have some free time, going to waste it."
