Chapter 1743

    ?Chapter 1743:

Startled by his boldness, Kylee scrambled after him into the room.

The instant sheid eyes on Car, words tumbled from her lips in a frantic rush. “Mom, this wasn’t my doing. I never asked Mr. Wright toe here, and I certainly never breathed a word about your whereabouts to him.”

Elwood fixed his unwavering gaze on Car as she sat propped against the hospital bed, then gave a curt nod. “She speaks the truth. I tracked you down myself.”

Car didn’t say anything, but her expression was far from pleased.

Elwood shifted his attention to Kylee, his voice softening slightly. “Ms. Wright, would you permit me a private conversation with your mother?”

Kylee hesitated, offering neither consent nor refusal. Instead, she turned her questioning eyes toward Car.

Seeing no readable expression on her mother’s face and no indication she intended to speak, Kylee weighed her options before finally nodding. “Okay.” With that decision made, she retreated from the room with careful steps, pulling the door closed behind her.

Elwood approached the bed with measured strides.

His eyes fell upon the pristine bandage encircling Car’s neck, and concern flickered across his features.

“Are you still in pain?” Elwood inquired, his voice thick with genuine worry as he settled into the bedside chair.

Car didn’t answer his question. Her eyebrows knitted together in frustration as she fixed him with a re. “Mr. Wright, what exactly do you hope to achieve bying here? I’ve told you repeatedly—I don’t know you! What’s the point of pestering me like this?”

Elwood met her gaze directly and spoke each word with rity. “Car, do you really not know me? Is there truly nothing that has ever existed between us?”

“Absolutely nothing! What possible benefit would I gain from deceiving you?” Though her voice rang with conviction, Car was unable to maintain eye contact with Elwood. She turned her gaze away.

“I’ve conducted a thorough investigation into our shared history,” Elwood said. The words had just escaped his lips when Car’s entire demeanor shifted, herposure cracking.

“So, are you still going to continue this charade of hiding the truth from me?” Elwood pressed.<fn0278> Updates are released by fι?dnοvel</fn0278>

Car’s eyes betrayed a subtle tremor. She tried hard topose herself and said, “I haven’t the faintest idea what you’re talking about, Mr. Wright.”

Rather than pursuing the obvious deception, Elwood smoothly redirected the conversation. “Since you refuse to discuss our past, we’ll set that aside. Let’s focus on the present moment instead. Does your wound still throb with pain?”

“My affairs are none of your business, Mr. Wright. We share no connection whatsoever.” Car’s voice carried the chill of winter, each word designed to create distance between them.

Elwood remained unruffled by her coldness, his tone maintaining its steady warmth. “I understand you’re experiencing profound emotional turmoil right now. I’ve learned about yesterday’s incident at Mingo. Being betrayed so cruelly by your own daughter must have shattered your heart.”
