    Nni bit her lip, guilt etching her face. “I’m so sorry, Elwood. I was wrong. Yell at me if you want.”

    After a pause, he met her gaze. “Since you see your mistake and regret it, I’ll give you a chance to make things right. Do you want it?”


    “Yes. How can I make things right?” Nni asked, her voice eager.


    Elwood spoke. “I need you to tell me everything about what happened between Car and me. Both you and Mom are so set on keeping my past buried, which means something painful or unsettling must have happened. Every time Car’s namees up, my head hurts. I know she and I were involved romantically before. And the way you and Mom act around Kylee—it’s obvious you both have a problem with Car, and it’s tied to me.”


    As he spoke, a shadow crept into his eyes. He looked at Nni, his tone firm. “I want answers. Tell me why.”


    Nni went quiet, caught off guard by his directness. For a long moment, she struggled to find words. Eventually, she looked at him, her voice heavy. “I’m sorry, Elwood. I can’t give you what you’re asking for.”


    Biting her lip, she continued, “Let me be clear. I know now I was wrong to meddle in your life. But even so, I don’t want you digging up the past. You’re right—you and Car were together once. But then, she betrayed you, and that’s why you two broke up.”

    Nni took a deep breath, her cheeks flushing with indignation. “Not long after you broke up, Car rushed into marriage with her current husband, and within months, she was pregnant! How could someone so heartless like her be worth your longing? So please, stop asking about her. I’m not telling you anything!”


    Elwood stayed silent, his brows knitting tightly, a storm cloud settling over his face. Had Car really betrayed him in the past? And so soon after their breakup, she had married someone else and gotten pregnant.

    He steadied himself and met her gaze. She spoke again, softer now. “Elwood, just hear me out. If you end up remembering your past with her on your own, fine. But if you don’t, stop forcing it. Sometimes, not knowing is better.”


    Elwood’s voice was t as he replied, “I understand. Alright, I’m leaving now.” With that, he rose from the couch and walked out of the room.
