Skye fell silent. Right, wasn''t this proof that he cared? If he didn''t, why go to all this trouble to keep her safe?
Still, something didn''t add up. “Why can''t he just protect her himself?"
"He''s shy!" Yvonne replied, matter-of-fact.
Skye wasn''t wholly convinced but moved on. "Well, ording to a very reliable source, your future sister-inw is arriving in Yornd today," Yvonne dered triumphantly.
"Then what are we waiting for? Send me her info-fast," Skye ordered, no- nonsense. Now that the woman was about to arrive, there was no time for hesitation.
Honestly, after all these years of introducing Finley to every kind of woman under the sun only for him to turn his nose up at all of them, Skye was dying to see what exceptional creature had finally managed to capture his attention.
"I''ll have Star send you the details,” Yvonne said—she barely knew this Tegan woman herself.
"Tell her to hurry," Skye pressed. "And who''s after her, anyway?"
"Her ex-boyfriend''s family."
"She has an ex already?"
"What''s wrong with that?" Yvonne shot back.
"Nothing at all!" Skye dered, genuinely unconcerned. If Finley liked this woman but was too gutless to go after her, Skye sure wasn''t afraid to make a move for him. Waiting for that slowpoke to get a clue could take until the end of time. Forget it— she''d just snatch the woman up herself.
"That''s good, then," Yvonne said, on the verge ofughing. "But you better look after your future sister-inw. Finley pleaded with Star for two hours to make this happen."
Skye could hardly imagine Finley, cold and reserved Finley, begging Star for help over a woman. She shuddered at the thought. So bizarre.
"Then why didn''t he just call me himself?" she grumbled.
Yvonne sighed dealing with clever, perceptive types was always exhausting. "He''s probably worried you''d bombard him with endless questions. Bet you anything, if you called him right now, he''d just deny he''d just deny the whole thing." s?novels
Skye snorted in response. "I don''t care about his denials. I''ll just drag the woman
right in front of him—see if he can keep ying dumb then."
"Love that attitude! That''s exactly the energy I was hoping for," Yvonne said, thoroughly satisfied.
They chatted some more, Yvonne weaving story after story, even scripting what Finley would say if Skye tried to verify things. By the time the call ended, Skye couldn''t separate truth from fiction.
After she hung up, Yvonne looked over to find Xander lounging on the sofa, a cigar smoldering between his fingers.
She fanned the air in front of her nose, face scrunched in distaste. “God, that reeks. Can''t you put it out?"
Xander shot her a look, arching a brow. "Didn''t your brother used to smoke just as much? Never saw youin then.”
Yvonne hesitated. "People change. It didn''t bother me before. Now, I just can''t stand it."
Xander set the cigar aside, then eyed her. "Are you sure Skye won''te after you when she figures out what you just did?"
This wasn''t harmless fun-it was a full-on trap Thanks to Ste''s years in Portis City, Xander knew a thing or two about the tangled rtionships. involved. Tegan was Uriah''s girl the one he''d guarded like treasure and Yvonne just sed Skye on her, all for Finley?
Was she trying to stir up a ho''s nest?
"She won''t have time," Yvonne grinned mischievously.
Xander only looked more confused.
"By the time Skye realizes what''s really going on, she''ll be too deep in a battle with Urjah over her new
sister inw to worry about me trapping her. All her focus will be on
winning Tegan over."
Xander could only shake his head in awe. "You two are unbelievable. It''s like you''re
always finding new ways to throw each other to the wolves."
