Chapter 948

“People like that have eyes and ears everywhere, all over the world. My advice? Don''t get involved. Just behave yourself, okay?"

"It''s only a phone call to Skye!" Ste protested.

Yvonne fell silent at the mention of Skye. God, Skye. Just saying her name made Yvonne scowl. Skye had pilfered so much of her stuff and never bothered to give any of it back.

But still it was just a call. That was nothing. If anyone asked, she''d simply say, "Skye''s handling it." If trouble came of it, then Skye could wade into the mess herself.

Wait. "You said Finley told you Skye''s in Yornd? Told her to look after Tegan?" "Yeah, that''s what he said."

"Then why isn''t he calling her himself?"

"He didn''t say!" Ste sounded exasperated, maybe even a little nervous.

Finley told her where Skye was, suggested Ste call—but wouldn''t do it himself.

He was her brother! Surely, it would have been easier for him.

Yvonne, who just moments ago had been utterly unwilling to budge, suddenly softened. "Fine. I''ll call her right now."

Ste stared at her phone, dumbfounded. She''d had a whole argument ready to go, and all that useless prep faded in a heartbeat.

    "Wait, seriously?"

“Since when do I lie to you?" Yvonne said smoothly, almost yfully. “Be good and wait for my good news."

    With that, she hung up.

On her end, Yvonne was grinning with the sly mischief of a fox. Xander, justing out in freshly changed clothes, caught sight of her sitting cross-legged with a wicked grin, phone already at her ear as she dialed Skye.

No sooner had the call connected than Yvonne asked, "Skye, tell me: would you like a sister-inw?"

Xander paused, one eyebrow arched in disbelief. What on earth was she on about this early in the day?

On the other end, Skye sounded half-asleep, voice muffled. She''d clearly only just woken up. "You want a what?"

"A sister-inw," Yvonne repeated, breezy and bright.

For years, the Yoder family had run themselves ragged worrying over Skye''s and Finley''s love lives. The truth was, Skye had a boyfriend. She''d been dating him for three years now.

Yvonne had never gotten over the injustice of it-how on earth did a diehard tomboy like Skye snag a boyfriend before her? It seemed to shatter all rules of logic.

Too bad the Yoder elders weren''t impressed. They''d shot everything down with a singlemand:

"Your brother has to get married first, then we''ll talk."

This drove Skye nuts. Finley had never so much as looked at a woman-how long was she

    ???

supposed to wait for him to settle down? Skye''s desperation got so severe that she started setting Finley up with every decently presentable woman she could find, from Ferrond to Yornd to Revera. Anyone who passed muster Skye would haul in front of her brother.

None of them made it past Finley''s scrutiny. Finally, he stoppeding home altogether, leaving Skye even more frantic and fixated she'' be obsessed with finding him a wife, downright deranged about it.

So when Yvonne asked if Skye wanted a sister-inw, Skye lost it.

"Yvonne, what the hell is wrong with you? Are you calling me at the crack of dawn just to rub it in?"

Skye, after years of being the butt of jokes over this, had grown a tough hide—but being taunted about it by Yvonne, first thing in the morning, was a new low.

Yvonne grinned, unbothered. "Hey, I''m just asking if you want a sister-inw. I''m actually offering to give you one, How exactly is that an

Skye hesitated. Yvonne wasn''t the type to insult people with words; her attacks were always more direct. "So-so you''re not messing with me?"

"I''m not," Yvonne said, serious for once. "So, do you want a sister-inw or not?"

"Of course I want one!” Skye nearly shouted. "Wait—are you serious? You really have one?"
